The XMI Style Guide

This Month's Style Pairing

Here are a few simple guidelines that can make matching a shirt and tie effortless.

Complement Color

  • Keep colors within the same family.

  • 'Earth tones' (such as brown, olive, rust...) generally go best with other earth tones.

  • Bright colors should be matched with other brights.

  • Black is a neutral color: it can go with anything.

Contrast Patterns

  • Match large patterns with small patterns.
For example, a wide stripe tie works well with a narrow stripe shirt.  A tie with a large geometric pattern complements a shirt with a small, tight plaid.

  • Avoid matching stripe shirts, ties and suits. The same rule applies to plaids.

  • Break up the patterns for a sophisticated look.  A rich, elegant paisley should be considered a solid and goes with almost any shirt.
